The headgear debate in women's lacrosse is more complicated than it seems and the science tells a wild story. Massachusetts mandated helmets in the eighties and every coach unanimously voted to remove them because the game got MORE dangerous. Florida is the only state with a headgear mandate now and yes a University of Florida study found fifty nine percent lower concussion rates BUT other research shows players self report being more aggressive with helmets and getting hit in the head more often. Coaches say refs call fewer penalties for head contact when girls wear helmets assuming the protection handles it. So you get more aggressive play plus less enforcement. The science shows headgear reduces impact magnitude from stick and ball contact where seventy two percent of concussions happen but it doesn't change impact rates meaning players get hit just as often they just hit harder because of risk compensation. If we're worried about youth safety lighter balls make way more sense. Soft foam balls are already approved for youth leagues at two point four ounces instead of five ounces. Kids develop technique safely then graduate to regulation when ready. I think headgear should be player choice not a mandate because mandating it changes the culture and integrity of women's lacrosse as a finesse sport.
