Deep Purple has released 24 studio albums. Perfect Strangers came out on October 29, 1984. The band formed in March 1968 in London. Their current lineup is Ian Gillan on vocals, Simon McBride on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Don Airey on keyboards, and Ian Paice on drums. It started with ex-Searchers drummer Chris Curtis pitching a "revolving supergroup" called Roundabout to manager Tony Edwards in 1967. Curtis recruited his flatmate Jon Lord on keyboards, who brought in bassist Nick Simper and suggested guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Blackmore auditioned from Hamburg, they ditched Curtis after his erratic behavior, and settled on Rod Evans for vocals—whose drummer Ian Paice impressed Blackmore enough to join too. By March 1968 the classic Mark I lineup was set. Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, and Roger Glover wrote Perfect Strangers. It's about the band's reunion after years apart—former friends and bandmates who became perfect strangers, full of suspicion and nerves, but reconnecting like old times once they started playing. Gillan has said the title works as an oxymoron capturing both the distance and the eventual closeness. The current 5 members are all still alive. Ian Gillan is 80, Roger Glover and Ian Paice are 77, Don Airey is 77, and Simon McBride is 47. Among the originals, Jon Lord died in 2012 and Tommy Bolin in 1976, but the rest are still with us. #DeepPurple, #PerfectStrangers, #1984, #SmokeOnTheWater, and #HardRock.
