If students must be held accountable… are educators willing to do the same? When you’re the leader of the classroom it’s easy to point out the “bad” behavior that students struggle with. It often ends up with level of constant criticism, nagging, shame and blame when correcting a student. It’s draining and creates a constant power struggle that is disruptive for everyone. This often includes hostile confrontation towards students in front of their peers … in the name of demanding “respect” for rules and regulations assigned by districts. I’ve witnessed educators get caught in the constant loop of berating students, frequently stopping a powerful lesson to chastise a student for wearing hoodies and having cell phones despite full participation. I choose not to overreact, I’d rather the class stay operating smoothly and allow students to stay engaged. I will however, after class, pull the student to the side and say, “OMG you participated so well today! You spoke up, you were actively listening and you gave me great eye contact. Now I did notice you were wearing your hoodie or tinkering with your phone a lot. I really don’t want you to be punished by the school policy enforcers and have your things taken away. So make a wise choice and leave those things tucked in your back pack next time— cause I got your back and I ain’t trying to see you get in “trouble” … okay? Can you do that for you and me? I’m super proud of you, I know you can make this small adjustment, so handle your biz, ok?? For the most part I get healthy responses and we carry on without being drained or pained- I have no time or energy for that. I completely understand that this may seem impossible or a totally different approach from what folks are accustomed to. It may not work for you— but overall it works for me when applied without extreme prison warden vibes.
