Most people don’t realize I designed this entire staircase renovation—and now this hidden room/secret office—completely in my head. We didn’t use a professional designer or architect (we did have an engineer give us the green light), and there were never any plans on paper. Just my vision, painter’s tape on the floor, and me waving my arms trying to translate what was in my head to our framers. I didn’t get it right the first time. There were pivots and reworks along the way. But standing in this space now, I KNOW this was the right use of space—and unlocking this hidden office under the stairs will completely changed how our work days look. Even without natural light, this secret office is working so well for Levi and I (we’re both full-time work-from-home life), and I didn’t want to let a windowless space stop me from going all in on the sophisticated, academic-inspired design I had in mind. So yes… we went dark. And I was nervous at first, but seeing it all come together, I’m so glad I trusted my vision instead of playing it safe. What do you think… was going dark the right choice? Follow along because next up: turning the under-platform cave into one very bougie, sophisticated dog lounge 🐾
