Explore Creator Insights & Detailed Media Analysis for Debt relief is NOT the same as debt consolidation and I’m tired of these companies acting like it is
Debt relief companies are somehow able to advertise themselves as debt consolidation and I genuinely do not understand how it’s legal because it is absolutely false. They are scamming you
If a company is saying they’ll consolidate your debt into one payment but they aren’t giving you a loan, they’re scamming you
Companies like Freedom Debt Relief, National Debt Relief, and a whole slimy slew of others have you stop paying your bills and pay them a monthly fee instead
They also have you change all of your contact info to their company’s contact info so that when these accounts eventually go to collections, your credit card or loan company reach out to them instead of you
At that point, they start trying to negotiate a lower amount than you owe for you to pay what’s known as a settlement
They’ll tell you this will lower your out of pocket cost anywhere from 35-70% but what they won’t tell you is how bad you’re getting screwed in the process
They won’t tell you that every month you don’t pay, your credit score is going to tank further and further because of missed payments
They won’t tell you that the estimated savings is based on your total debt after all of your late fees and additional interest are added, instead of being based on your enrolled amount
They won’t tell you that their fee for settling these accounts is anywhere from 20-30% of your enrolled debt
They also won’t tell you initially that there’s a high likelihood of you being sued, but once you’re in, they’ll offer to give you legal protection as well, for an additional fee of course
So after all of that is taken into consideration, you haven’t actually saved much money, if any at all, AND you’ve ruined your credit in the process for years to come
When all you had to do from the beginning was use the snowball method to pay down your debt
It’ll take a little time and it may cost you more than you want in interest, but at least you do won’t ruin your credit or risk being sued in the process →
