I lost a World Championship… again. Actually, for the 6th time. For the first time ever, after 18 months of competing and this being my 60th competition at blue belt, I was the number 1 seed… and I got taken out by the number 24 guy in the first round, which just goes to show that anybody can take out anybody, and you always have to fight with that in mind. I moved up to lightweight cuz I wanted to eat, and was feeling confident about my training after nerding out on Gordon Ryan DVDs for months. I thought this time that I had a real shot at winning a World Championship. Well, it didn’t happen. There’s so much physical and mental preparation that leads up to something that’s decided in just 5 minutes. Out of almost 230 matches, this was one of the fastest paced I’ve fought, with constant back and forth, and eventually losing 8-6. I’ve been reading The Art of Learning, and he mentions there’s a hair’s breadth between losing and winning… and this was exactly that. Did I want to win? Absolutely. Did I? Nope, and I can’t change that now, but what I can do is keep studying my craft, go back next year, and try again. I’m not a high level athlete, but after I lose, I think about how the greats also have, like Tainan in last year’s Worlds, and he picked himself back up and kept going, cuz that’s the only option. That inspires me. I ain’t gonna stop. Also, congratulations to all my friends who did super well at this tournament. And, my good friend Will who literally competed for the first time EVER, which I’ll be doing a separate video about… stay tuned. #bjj #jiujitsu
